Summer Camp 2005 teaches 3D modelling
and gives the students opportunity to shine with
their group projects. |
While
at the camp, the students were exposed to one
of the best VR centers in the world. The Virtual
Reality Applications Center (VRAC) provides an
inside look at what makes these high-tech gadgets
work. Students not only saw some of the most impressive
simulators, the highlight being the six sided
C6, but also got to experience low cost VR. Headed
by Shana Smith, a Professor in Industrial Technology,
this low cost system allows almost any business
or group to work in 3d. |

High School Visit Boone High School, 12-10-2004
300K | 150 K
VRClassroom members visited the Boone High School to introduce our program and present our works. |
Our team members visited the Boone High School to demonstrate our VR products to two classes of students there. The instructors provided a description of VR technologies. Additionally, the mechanical, architectural, geometrical, and biological 3D models were displayed during the 2-hour presentation. To enhance their hands-on experience, students were invited to manipulate the 3D models themselves. Other activities designed to introduce the VRClassroom program included a brochure and a video of our previous events and projects. |

Summer
Camp 2004 ISU,
06-17/18-2004
300K | 150 K
The 2004 summer camp was successfully held at the Iowa State University. |
June 17 began like any other day for sixteen central Iowa teenagers as they boarded a van and were transported to Iowa State University. But these teenagers were about to experience a two-day camp unlike any other, an experience in virtual reality. As the groups arrived at Friley Hall on the Iowa State Campus they were greeted by members of the I.S.U. residence hall department as well as their hosts for the camp, representatives of Iowa State University, Iowa Central Community College and Des Moines Area Community College. Together they would explore the technology behind virtual reality and experience first hand the power of creating a virtual model for themselves.

Pilot Test 4 ICCC, 04-13-2004
Students of the Iowa Central Community College CAD Technology program attended the 4th pilot test. |
Students of the Iowa Central Community College CAD Technology program used the 3d system as a visual feedback tool. Students were asked to perform several tasks in this activity. First, they developed VBA programming to drive the AutoCAD software into creation of solid objects. Students were then asked to revise and adjust the program parameters to achieve a specific design objective. As the 3d display was updated to reflect the change, the instructor provided narration explaining the process of converting the model for use in a virtual display system. Once the virtual display was placed on screen, students were asked to reflect on the change and compare it to their expectations before display. Students were led through this cycle several times, each time reviewing the virtual graphics and reflecting on the impact of the change. |

Pilot Test 3 DMACC, 03-26-2004
The third pilot test was given to students at the Des Moines Area Community College. |
The first practice run of the dual projection virtual reality at Des Moines Area Community College’s Ankeny campus ran fairly smoothly. In class that day, the instructor explained how to draw the surface line that represents the intersection of two cones. Most students struggle to grasp the true shape of the surface line. Using the VR projection seemed to give a better spatial orientation of the objects and what the line looks like in 3D space. One can see how this software and hardware can be used for many other applications, as well as how it can be implemented to help other drafting or modeling students to grasp objects and spatial situations to their fullest extents. Seeing the next practice run at the ICCC’s VR lab along with learning how this technology is applied to the classroom should be very interesting and informative. |

Pilot Test 2 ISU, 03-07-2004
The second pilot test was given to students in learning the pictorial view at the Iowa State University. |
| After the first pilot test of the Virtual Reality tools at Iowa State University was presented to a class, a second was then given to the students of the same class. Following the first test, the concept of pictorial view was explained. Students were able to practice that with the VR tools. Also, the models in this test were mechanical parts with more complex geometries and motions, which were made to help students understand their operation steps. |

Pilot Test 1 ISU, 02-23-2004
A pilot test of the Virtual Reality tools was given in an introductory to design course at the Iowa State University. |
A pilot test of the Virtual Reality tools was given in an introductory to design course at Iowa State University. Some basic knowledge of 3D engineering graphics was introduced at the beginning of the class. Both the static and motional models were presented via the VR tools. As an alternative to the traditional media, the VR tools were used by students to sketch the models after examining them in VR scenes. |
