Female and minority students encouraged to attended

June 08-10, 2005
Iowa State University

Online Registration

Program Description

VR4u! will introduce incoming 9th-11th grade students to virtual reality, design, and technical graphics technology. Female and minority students are especially encouraged to attend. Students you recommend, if chosen, will participate in a no-cost two-day workshop at Iowa State University. They will learn how to use state-of-the-art computer-aided-design and virtual reality tools to create virtual 3D objects or designs and then share their experiences with other students in a student design showcase.

Your students will also have an opportunity to visit Iowa State University's world-famous Virtual Reality Applications Center (VRAC), home of one of the world's first 6-sided fully immersive virtual reality CAVEs.

VR4u! is part of a National Science Foundation project, which is introducing VR tools into design and technical graphics classes at Iowa State University, Des Moines Area Community College, and Iowa Central Community College. The project also hopes to encourage  female and minority students to pursue careers in design and graphics technology.

Please nominate students you believe would benefit by attending VR4u! this coming summer! In particular, please nominate students who have demonstrated aptitude and interest in science, technology, and math. Register your students online at http://www.vrclassroom.org by March 31, 2005.

Health Information

Studies show that some people experience motion sickness or other forms of discomfort during virtual reality experiences. Please discuss the following with students before recommending them for the workshop:

Photic seizures: epileptic seizures or migrane headaches. People with a history of epilepsy or migrane headaches are at risk.

Motion sickness: dizziness, disorientation, mild headaches, or stomach discomfort. Most people can be in a virtual environment for 10 minutes or more without feeling any motion sickness, but a person who easily gets motion sickness (for example, when riding in a car) may also experience motion sickness in a virtual environment.
